What is the Zeitgeist of Today?

1. Body Positivity: Runways, models, and stores have adapted to embrace the body positivity movement that has occurred within the past year of 2020 and now in 2021. Clothing is becoming more available to every body shape and body size. Consumers are loving this change and designers are able to understand what every consumer wants nowadays.
2. New Lifestyle Norm(s): Covid-19 has affected everyone in some shape or form, but in the fashion industry masks have placed a key role in the styles and what is presented on runways. Masks are now being paired with outfits in stores which we have never seen before until Covid-19. The masks are a new everyday norm for every individual so we have to make sure that the masks are holding up and doing their job.
3.Genderless Style:Inclusivity and diversity have been a huge part of 2020-2021. Because of this, many models of different sizes, genders, and origins have been able to walk to catwalk. In this year’s collections we have seen many designers make and design pieces that are inclusive to everyone. Unisex clothing has been noteably produced by many regular and luxury retailers.

3 Designers that represent the Zeitgeist
Nike: Nike recently introduced their plus size collection. This collection was inspired by the body positivity movement. In this year’s Spring/Summer lineup, one can see that these designers have worked very hard to create unique pieces and styles for women and men of many different sizes and builts
Christian Siriano: Christian Siriano is a talented designer that shocked many people with his Spring/Summer collection. In this collection he addressed political issues as well as current events. In this collection you can see that many references to voting are made. He also designed decorative masks to match many pieces in this collection! As we know, the world around us has changed drastically since the pandemic began. Masks are the new norm.
Louis Vuitton: In today’s society, we are opening our mind to new ideas and norms. One of these new trends involves unisex clothing. Louis Vuitton incorporated many of these designs into their Spring/Summer 2021 collection. With that being said, their Spring/Summer 2021 collection is so inspirational due to its many social and political references!
First Monday in May
The movie we chose for this was “The First Monday in May'' (2016). This movie showcases the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibition in history of the Chinese-inspired Western fashions. This fashion exhibition brings individuals together from all over the world to showcase fashion, their designers, and politics involved in the art. The spirit of the time influenced by the movie is shown by bringing cultures together for one purpose and that is fashion. This movie worked with China to help produce the exhibition, and the attempt to show their culture to the public and how the western culture can perceive their fashion. The fashion of the time is shown by celebrities in this movie and all sorts of different styles showcased at this exhibition.
THE SPIRIT AND FASHION OF THE TIMES
The spirit and fashion of the time we watched in the movie influenced how we can see China from their perspective and how celebrities interpret fashion at these shows. In reality though, fashion is heavily influenced by social media, the TV, and the internet. This movie did a great job at showing a different culture and the fashions and clothing styles that they wear or wanted to showcase for this exhibition. The exhibition from the movie provided that art can be fashion for any era in the future or providing insight into past eras.
